Oh, where to begin?

Two thousand five has begun with a bang here at stevenolson.com. A number of projects wrapped up with nice results, including an actual email from a world-famous author. And several new endeavors have gotten underway, including perhaps the biggest one of all.

Kidstuff
Two more books for kids have hit the shelves (or the online warehouse, as the case may be): Weapons of Mass Destruction: The International Atomic Energy Agency and that biography of Neil Gaiman. Here's how to get the attention of a busy and famous author: send an email to his website entitled, "I have written and published a biography of you." Neil Gaiman himself replied (a direct quote: "the"), and since he was the unwitting subject of it, I have forwarded a copy of the book to him. Here's hoping he gets back to me with something other than a lawsuit.

Technical
For the Central Technology Group at Electronic Arts, I edited and redesigned their internal customer web site, all 500 pages of it. The site is built on the Open Wiki platform, which uses an ASP/Relational DB mechanism for storing web pages. Visitors to the site can edit pages directly through their web browsers. Thanks to the open standard, I also made some technical contributions, including a left-hand navigation bar and a script to dump the database contents to a text file for archiving.

Technical
For an enterprise software company, I am finishing up the Administration Guide for their platform, which processes transactions in real-time against a set of business rules that users can define and change. After evaluation, transactions are rejected or forwarded to internal order entry systems. For more information on this remarkable product, see Edge Dynamics.

Kidstuff
The manuscript on Henry David Thoreau was completed and sent to my editor, Christine. It's a bit of a challenge to make a simple life of eating nuts and berries seem appealing to a Grades 5-8 audience, but at least my diet has improved because of it.

The new Olson Family Archive was not delivered by Santa this year because a couple of brothers didn't finish edits to their biographies. Hi, Henry. Hi, Eric. Now that you've read this far in my newsletter, maybe you can keep going through those biographies, eh? Call it a "targeted marketing message."

and...
On the day after Christmas, after correcting a couple of minor grammar errors in the presentation, my girlfriend and first editor, Margaret Juhae Lee, accepted my proposal of marriage. Life has certainly accelerated in new directions at stevenolson.com. I know more about love, commitment, and flatware than ever before. To meet the happy couple, click here.

Have a warm and wonderful Spring.

Cheers,
-SteveO

Editor's Note: Why is our engagement listed last?

Because at the end of each and every day, you and your lovely face are the last things I see before slipping off to sleep.

Oh, honey....

And it provides solid metrics on saturation among the readership.

Way to ruin a moment, dude.
