SteveO's Newsletter

March 2004, v2e2

Greetings, All--

Apologies for the delay in delivering this edition of the newsletter. In the past two weeks, the emails have been demanding to know where, oh where, is the stevenolson.com newsletter. A simple trip to return a wall-mounted dish rack became a two-week odyssey through the less attended, yet perfectly lit, diaramas of the Big Blue Box. However, I am now conversant in IKEAN and can pound pasteboard into edible mush. Subscription accounts will be credited with a free BLUND (say "blønd"). On to the news:

The family archive project was completed and released for Christmas last year. Five days before Christmas, however, second-day airmail turns into ten-days-to-two-weeks airmail. Even though it was late, the family liked it, and that's all that counts. On the stevenolson.com site, you can check out the home page for the Olson-Gant Family Archive. Plans are in the works for Version 1.1 and for the first release for the Eichelberger side of the family.

Kidstuff
Shortly after completing The Gettysburg Address, I began work on my sixth and seventh books for kids. Of particular interest is a biography of comics writer Neil Gaiman. Readers of Gaiman's Sandman or Spiegelman's Maus series know that comics aren't just for kids anymore. Nevertheless, I am endeavoring to do justice to Gaiman's fine work for younger audiences. Manuscripts for both books are due at the end of the month. For specific examples of my writing for kids, please see the Kidstuff page.

Games
Aye, for I have seen the beauty of Minis Tirith and the forces of Mordor that would defile it. And that Gandalf can sure take a punch. For Electronic Arts Los Angeles, I have begun work on their Lord of the Rings™: Battle for Middle-earth™ title. We're starting with a small project that seeks to answers questions and rumors in circulation about the game. Here's one to add: it's going to look great, with organic character animation and spectacular modelling of your favorite locations. Look for more information on the EA website.

Fiction
Over the winter, a friend in games needed a review of three story ideas for novelizations based on one of his company's brands. When I completed the editing assignment, I sagely chose to refuse his money and to offer to do more work for free. I've submitted my idea for a novelization on another of his brands, and he is beginning to shop it to publishers. If you can say, "in development," you can buy me lunch at Spago. Well, okay: Taco Bell.

Education
Over the winter, I took a course in database development for Microsoft Access. Down the line, stevenolson.com will feature an online searchable database of my current projects and resume. Just imagine the hours of searching pleasure in one convenient place.

Legal
In the interests of privacy and avoiding lawsuits, feel free to unsubscribe to this newsletter. No worries at all.

Please inquire about any of your upcoming projects or for a time-tested recipe for pasteboard stew here. Enjoy the Spring.

Cheers,
-SteveO

Editor's Note: "You're just milking this IKEA thing."
