December 2004, v3e1

Hi, Folks--

Another busy year here at stevenolson.com has come to a close. Over the last twelve months, we've scoured the country (see below) to open new markets, doubled in size (see below), and managed to look up in wonder at the time flying by. Here then are this quarter's highlights:

Technical
The project to document Electronic Arts' character development application has been published to worldwide users. The final docs were passed through RoboHelp Office X5 to generate HTML pages, which were then altered in Dreamweaver and augmented with javascript navigation trees. Already, the positive feedback has been pouring in. "Great docs!" according to one email from the Los Angeles studio. Let's see that again in slow-motion:
"G   r   e   a   t      d   o   c   s   !"

Kidstuff
I completed a manuscript for a book on the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and have moved on to a bio of Henry David Thoreau. Having visited Walden Pond, I have a personal understanding of his writing: "The mosquitoes have verily sucked the marrow from my bones."

Technical
The manual and FAQ for The Lord of the Rings, the Battle for Middle-earth have been completed, and the game is slated for release in time for Christmas. With over eighty fighting units from Mordor, Isengard, Rohan, and Gondor, it promises to be a vast and impressive game. For more, check out the official site.

Employee of the Year
Our doubling in size this year is attributable in no small measure to Employee #2. For over a year, Harp Goldman has been interning at stevenolson.com. Her sweet smile at our front desk belies a sharp nose for opportunities in meat and cheese. Our flex-time program has allowed Harp to juggle other life-duties like walking the neighbor kids and barking through the fence at the parking lot next door. For photos of Harp the Wonder Intern, click here. Congratulations, Harp.

Webdev
I am wrapping up another edition of the Olson Family Archive to place under the Christmas tree this year. The 2004 version features new content, images, and code, including a create-your-own-slideshow tool that I built in javascript. Have you noticed a javascript theme?

Travel
In September, I fulfilled a longtime dream of driving across the northern part of the United States and camping in many of our National Parks. Forty-eight hundred miles later, I have been enlightened to a few things: it's truly a beautiful country, McDonald's is everywhere, and I'd do it all again.

As always, feel free to inquire about any of your upcoming projects at stevenolson.com. Have a happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

Cheers,
-SteveO
