 RoboHELP Systems

Company:

Open Table.com

Project:

Documentation for Rev 1.0 of OpenTable client application.

Platform/Format:

Windows Help file

Description:

RoboHELP, a development tool, is used to create Windows Help systems. When you select HELP from the menu of an application, you are opening the output of a tool such as RoboHELP.

This sample is taken from the help system for a PC-based application that handles a restaurant's reservations via phone, walk-in, and Internet. The app resides on a specialized PC that is installed in a restaurant and communicates with the reservation server via modem.

In a busy restaurant, hosts and hostesses can get harried, and many of them do not use computers on a regular basis. For the Help system, we sought to minimize the amount of text and to make it as simple and direct as possible. So, the system had two organization schemes; one was based on the architecture of the software, while the other allowed the user to search for answers to questions that began, "How do I...?". The system also featured an index, a table of contents, and search capabilities.

Notes:

The power of this WinHelp system can't be demonstrated in a single HTML doc. If you are ever in a finer restaurant, check out the reservation system: it may be OpenTable.com's application.
