Project:

SAMPLE for pitch to write copy for Web site

Platform/Format:

Web

Description:

The enclosed sample was submitted to the Sports Basement, a discount retailer of sporting goods, as a pitch to rewrite the entire Web site. Good copy is still the line that connects the dots on the Web. A good bit of web copy informs efficiently, drops hooks to the latest additions, and gives a bit of personality before stepping out of the way to let richer media win over the audience.

Notes:

This sample was not used for the Web site, but in my opinion it captured the tone and attitude of the company in a Web-friendly structure.

Our Story

A Different Approach to Shopping for Sports Gear:
Just Give Me the Shoes, Please

Why should it cost a lot of money to put on a pair of shoes and go have fun? Retail stores lead you to think that you need an expensive pair just to step outside. We disagree.

At the Sports Basement, we seek to put you into the right shoes, apparel or other sports equipment at the best possible price. We carry top-of-the-line sporting goods at deeply discounted prices, so you can buy smart, play hard, and be happy.

We consider ourselves to be more than a store. What started in a San Francisco warehouse has grown into a word-of-mouth phenomenon in which serious athletes, committed bargain hunters, and everyone in between can find great deals on sports gear, without paying for all the hype. As sponsors and participants, we're involved in the local sports community to connect people to their athletic goals. Towards that end, we keep the store open a few extra hours on Thursdays for last-minute shopping before the weekend.

When I go looking for shoes, I want:

Rock-bottom prices

When you go to a retail store to buy new shoes, you should ask for the posters in the window, because you're paying for them, too.

At The Sports Basement, retail isn't a price; it's a sin. That philosophy extends throughout our business. Every day, we seek out the best deals on overstocks, returns, and closeouts to bring them to our customers at the lowest possible prices. We pay our buyers to know the ins and outs of the retail market so that you don't have to pay too much for the right pair of shoes. Keeping our storefront profile low, rents down, and advertising budgets within reason, we can pass the savings on to you.

A good fit for my training program

Buying the wrong shoes can leave you with blisters on your feet, bruises to your ego, and red ink all over your credit card statement.

The Sports Basement carries a wide selection of brands and models to meet your ability, commitment, and price requirements. Just as important as the size of the shoe is the role that it will play in your lifestyle. Our Associates are likely to seriously train in the same sport as you and to ask you specific questions to get you in the right shoe, shirt, or short for your current regimen and goals.

The latest styles and models

If you come to The Sports Basement the day after a model is released, we might not have it. But if you can wait a couple of weeks, we may have your style or model in stock. And save you 50 percent.

Even the most popular styles and models become available at discount prices. Demand tapers off, stores order too much inventory, a change in company product lines, financing falls through-the list of reasons is long. For the most part, though, our customers don't carry where the latest and greatest comes from. They just want to see them on the shelf. That's what we aim to do.

For regular updates on product availability, check back at the Web site. If you're looking for something specific, drop us a note, and we will keep an eye out for it.

Nice people to point me in the right direction

The best person to help you with your next purchase is someone who's already bought it.

The Sports Basement employs rock climbers, tri-athletes, cyclists, skiers, and hikers who are committed to their sport. Between treks and training, our employee-athletes bring their enthusiasm for their sport to work, to help you to make the right purchasing decisions.

We provide the right incentives to our employee-athletes in the form of generous discounts, flexible hours to accommodate training, and company-wide support for their goals. Sometimes, it's hard to tell the employees from the shoppers-so enthusiastic is our staff about the quality, selection, and deals.

All these things in one convenient place

While manufacturers and major retailers open outlets in high-rent locations, The Sports Basement is tucked away in the warehouse district of San Francisco. If you're ever in town, feel free to drop by. In our 40,000 square-foot facility, there's bound to be a shoe-or jersey, parka, backpack-that fits you, your budget, and your sense of style.

If you can't make it to San Francisco, though, you've already come to the right place. Our entire catalog is available online.
